The Nikon 1 mirror-less cameras are hardly out of the gate and we already have a Nikon 1 J1, J2 and the new J3, a Nikon 1 V1 and V2, and now a new Nikon 1 S1. All of the Nikon 1 models can still be bought new from Nikon and if that is not confusing enough The Nikon 1 J2, J3, V2, and S1 are all listed as new models on the Nikon website.
To clear things up a bit, the latest models in the three different categories are the Nikon S1, J3 and V2. The S1 is the lower resolution 10.1 megapixel, less featured, model of the J series and to make things less confusing for us has a new slightly curvier body design. The J3 is the new 14.2 megapixel top of the line viewfinder screen model and the V2 is the new 14.2 megapixel electronic viewfinder top of the line model.
Now to fully confuse you, I have included the newest Nikon 1 press release from Nikon USA.

Nikon 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX NIKKOR Lens for Nikon Digital SLR
AF-S NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G IF-ED VR
I am looking for a new light weight telephoto zoom solution right now, hiking around in the jungles of South-East Asia, you don’t want to carry either too many or too heavy lenses with you. The AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED VR has been the accepted champion for some time, but Nikon also offers a smaller, lighter and less expensive, DX telephoto super-zoom, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR.
The AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED VR has the advantage of being designed for FX format cameras, which means it can be used on both FX and DX camera bodies and it seems to be a stronger build.
Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S VR Nikkor Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras
The AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR is lighter, less expensive and of comparable image quality, but can only be used on DX camera bodies. On a long trek in the jungle I will probably only take lighter weight DX camera bodies anyway, so this may be a better choice.

I haven’t made up my mind yet, maybe I will end up buying both of them.
The following is a comparison chart of the two lenses.
