I’m looking for a good day backpack that includes tripod/monopod capability.

Hi Jim,

Like most of us I have used a lot of different camera bags over the years but for the last four or five years I have been using ThinkTank exclusively.

My day bag has been the Change Up for quite a few years now and when I want to backpack it I just put it inside a normal lightweight backpack (very inconspicuous).

My favorite Think Tank backpack right now is the Shape Shifter because I can carry quite a lot in it but when the cameras are in use it collapses to a much smaller size. It also carries a 17-inch MacBook Pro with no problem.

There is a series of smaller backpacks called the Street Walkers which I have not tried yet, but have been intending to take a look at.

Tripods do strap on these bags but I have to admit that I still prefer to carry the tripod separately in it’s own bag (and it’s own strap), that way I can shift the weight around when it becomes uncomfortable.

I use a Lowepro Slingshot 300 AW

However I must admit, as I am getting older, the thoughts of carrying such a backpack with a D700 and f/2.8 lenses, tripod and so on – makes me weak in the knees. After a recent hike with all and sundry, the following week I just took my D300 and 18-200VR. Even then I did wonder whether I should just buy a Nikon Coolpix ;-)
